La Spezia and its gulf
Camedone lies just minutes from La Spezia, a port city nestled at the end of a gulf nicknamed the 'Gulf of Poets', for the countless writers and artists it has inspired.
Capital of the province that bears its name, La Spezia is a lively city where the naval fleet, a typical covered market and palm-lined pedestrian streets all meet. Its seafront promenade, the Passeggiata Morin, offers a pleasant walk with views over the gulf and its islands.
The Gulf of Poets owes its name to the many writers — Byron, Shelley, D.H. Lawrence — who stayed here and drew inspiration from it. Around the gulf, the villages of Portovenere, Lerici and the island of Palmaria complete a landscape of cliffs, coves and colourful villages.
From La Spezia, a regional train line runs along the coast and reaches all five Cinque Terre villages in just a few minutes — a precious asset for exploring the region without a car.
